Over the past several years, there has been an uptick in domestic US exploration success. These successes have coincided with the increased application of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Many new formations are now talked about that were never mentioned in a production setting before:
-
Bakken shale
-
Barnett shale
-
Haynesville shale
-
Marcellus shale
-
Eagle Ford shale
-
Fayetteville shale
-
Bossier shale
By way of example, the Barnett has been produced for nearly 50 years, but has had a resurgence of activity over the past few years almost entirely attributable to the application of new extraction technologies, not new virgin discoveries.
Historically oil and gas exploration has focused on the reservoir rock and has bypassed the source rock because extraction was easier using conventional methods. Utilizing the rapidly advancing technology of multi-staged hydraulic fracturing, primarily in a horizontal well bore environment, has unlocked the ability to produce tremendous amounts of oil and gas from the source rocks.
Osage has spent the past several months building a land position in the Mid Continent that will utilize these drilling and completion techniques. We believe that the industry will experience a significant growth in production and reserves over the next several years in both oil and gas domestically and it is imperative to participate in this trend to remain competitive in the marketplace.
